Following Korea’s second by-election in the past ten years, Democratic Party candidate Lee Jae-myung was elected as the country’s 21st president early Wednesday morning, by an 8% margin over the runner-up.

Lee was carried into office by a three-decade high voter turnout of nearly 80%, and thus assumes office with both a strong public mandate and his party holding a strong majority in the legislature.
